The competition takes place every two years and is open to all 24 art academies, colleges and universities organised by the Rectors’ Conference for German Art Universities/Colleges of Art. Each institution is invited to nominate two students (or teams). The institutions determine the selection procedure themselves. Out of a pool of 48 nominations, an independent panel of judges from the art sector selects then up to eight artists on the basis of portfolios submitted. The award-winning artists will participate in a group show at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.
The aim of the competition is to promote emerging artists and further their career. They gain experience with professional exhibition procedures of a renowned institution and make contacts with galleries, art associations, collectors and curators.
For the public, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the quality and variety of art education in Germany and offers an excellent opportunity to discover emerging artists and their artistic positions.
The competition is endowed with prize money of 30,000 euros. In addition, a production grant totalling 18,000 euros supports the artists in creating works specifically for the exhibition.
The competition is made possible by three institutions:
The competition has existed since 1984 and was previously known under the title "Kunststudentinnen und Kunststudenten stellen aus" (Art Students on Show). The 25th competition opened in May 2020. The award ceremony and exhibition opening is scheduled for 28 October 2021. The exhibition will then run until 16 January 2022.
