Fresh from university - emerging artists on show

Every two years, the national competition "Bundespreis für Kunststudierende" (Federal Award for Art Students) showcases the best art students in a group exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. Discover emerging artists you are likely to hear more about in the future.

The competition takes place every two years and is open to all 24 art academies, colleges and universities organised by the Rectors’ Conference for German Art Universities/Colleges of Art. Each institution is invited to nominate two students (or teams). The institutions determine the selection procedure themselves.

The aim of the competition is to promote emerging artists and further their career. An independent panel of judges from the art sector decides which nominated studends will participate in a group show at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. They gain experience with professional exhibition procedures of a renowned institution and make contacts with galleries, art associations, collectors and curators.

For the public, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the quality and variety of art education in Germany and offers an excellent opportunity to discover emerging artists and their artistic positions.

The competition is made possible by three institutions:

  • The Federal Ministry for Education and Research funds the competition
  • The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn houses the exhibition
  • Deutsches Studentenwerk organises and co-ordinates the project

The competition has existed since 1984 and was previously known under the title "Kunststudentinnen und Kunststudenten stellen aus" (Art Students on Show). The 24th competition opened in May 2018. The award ceremony and exhibition opening is scheduled for 17 October 2019. The exhibition will then run until 5 January 2020.
