China Trainee Program at German Higher Education Institutes –
German-Chinese Cooperation in Student Affairs
A cooperation project of Robert Bosch Stiftung and the German National Association for Student Affairs
Students from China constitute the largest group of foreign students at German institutes of higher education. The "China Trainee Programme at German Higher Education Institutes" of Robert Bosch Institute in cooperation with the German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk) will be launched as a pilot project running from September 2010 till March 2011 to improve support of the success of studies and the integration of approximately 27,000 students from China in the future. Eight Chinese trainees will become acquainted with the counselling and service facilities at one of 58 Studentenwerke sites during a six-month program. They will advise the higher education institutes and Studentenwerke on education, culture, and actual life of Chinese students in Germany, and will develop their own projects to raise the success of studying for Chinese students. The trainees will be able to contribute their qualifications, concepts, and work experience from China, and will liaise with Chinese students, higher education tutors and the Studentenwerke. They will sensitize for cultural differences, reduce prejudices and foster the communication between the parties involved. At their Studentenwerk, a mentor will be allocated to each trainee as a direct point of contact with whom they will jointly develop parameters for successful studies of Chinese students. After their return to China they will pass on to future Chinese students their knowledge of the education and university sectors in Germany as well as information on the social infrastructure of Studentenwerke. Good preparation for studying in Germany, which already starts in China, may contribute substantially to successful studying of Chinese students in Germany.
In cooperation with Robert Bosch Stiftung, German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk) will arrange for seminars lasting several days at the beginning of and after the trainee program that all trainees will attend. At the introduction seminar the Chinese trainees will learn the basic facts of the education and university sectors in Germany and about the structure and activities of Studentenwerke. The subsequent language course will provide an intense introduction to the specialist German language and prepare the trainees for the communication conventions at German institutes of higher education. The goal of the concluding review seminar is to evaluate the trainee program with a focus on further professional qualification in student affairs.
The trainees acquire key skills in project management, intercultural competence and international collaboration. They will support a sustainable transfer of know-how and establish a global network in the higher education and student affairs sectors. The young managers will establish long-term contacts of cooperation between China and Germany.
The program addresses to young managers at Chinese universities with first work experience in student affairs who are interested in intercultural exchange. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken German is required for participation in the trainee program and implementing the acquired multiplication skills in China.
